Eagle Heights

After a visit to Eagle Heights (in Eynsford, Kent) yesterday, I would really recommend going there.  It might seem a bit strange to some people that a guinea-pig lover could be a fan of birds of prey, but it's not likely a bird of prey can swoop into my front room to make a meal of my pet guinea pigs, and wild animals do what they have to in order to survive.

I went to Eagle Heights with my partner and two of my nephews (aged 7 and 10yrs).  Eagle Heights Wildlife Centre have various birds of prey (including eagles, owls, vultures, storks) which do open-aired displays twice daily, as well as having other animals like meerkats, reptiles, a camel, ducks, goats, pigs, otters, husky dogs and cheetahs.  At the end of their afternoon display, they also bring a cheetah out on a lead and they demonstrate its amazing speed at short distances by having the cheetah run down a zip wire - an amazing sight you would rarely get the opportunity to see and the kids loved it.

The staff at Eagle Heights are friendly and knowledgable and teach about the animals there and invite you to ask any questions you like.  You certainly have to respect the fact that you are around wild animals, but the staff know the animals in their care and are very good at giving safety advice (like when you need to sit still) during all the displays and notices are clearly around the centre so you are clear about keeping safe (there are clear barriers around their animals so you don't get too close and you can't eat outside during the open-air displays).   It is beautiful to see eagles and owls flying free in the sky as they fly from their handler to the perches around you.

There is also a good playground there for children and a smaller play area next to it for the under fives.  There is a dining area with a good selection of sandwiches, hot dogs, decent coffee, soft drinks and REAL slush puppies.  The gift shop sells some great items, from pocket money toys, good quality gifts and wicked T-shirts.

Trust me, it's an amazing place.  The centre gets funded by the people that visit, so going there helps them to stay open.  It has a wildlife hospital there, they rescue animals that should never have been kept as pets. They also provide falconry and husky experiences and you can book a party there. If you'd like to feel the wind beneath the flapping wings of a bird of prey over your head, to see a cheetah run down a hill a few feet away from you, or watch a camel take a dust bath, then I would highly recommend you go to Eagle Heights.

Apricot's trip to the vets.

Poor Apricot got a bit of hay stuck in her eye.  A few days ago (14th March) I had to take her to the vets as her eye looked swollen and went a milky white colour.  The vet took a look at her and had to remove a piece of hay from her eye.   He prescribed some Tiacil eye drops 4 times a day for a week, and now her eye is looking much better already.   The vet bill wasn't too bad either @ £45.  And Apricot looks so much happier now already  :0)

My guinea pigs passed their MOT!

On Saturday (17th Jan), I took all three of my guinea pigs to the vets for a check up, as Douglas has been scratching lately. The vet checked them all over and weighed them all and said they are very healthy (Douglas is 1.4kg, Oakley is 1.2kg and Apricot is 0.8kg).  However, as Douglas has been scratching it indicates he may have picked up mites.  All three piggies need treatment, as some guinea pigs have a stronger immunity to mites, but can still carry them.  So all three have had an injection and some spot-on treatment to repeat in a fortnight.

Since Truffle died in December 2007 in her operation to remove a cyst, I have become anxious that my Douglas had a cyst, as they were similar in shape. I was so happy when the vet gave him a thorough check over and reassured me that he doesn't have a cyst.  Mites are easy to treat and I can handle that, but I couldn't bear to lose another guinea pig in an operation like that again!

Merry Christmas from Jules & Co.

We all wish everyone a brilliant Christmas and a peaceful new year.  Our Chistmas day has been lovely and quiet.  Me and my partner had egg & chips for dinner, which was lovely.  Daisy (our cat) has just finished a tin of tuna fish.  Oakley, Douglas and Apricot (my guinea pigs) have been having treats of carrot and cucumber, and the mice are still sleeping and will get their treats when they wake up.

For Christmas this year, my partner got me a new camera.  I have been taking a few photo's.  Oakley and Douglas have posed well for me, but Apricot was feeling a bit shy and run off to hide.  Daisy is not feeling up to having her picture taken either, and has avoided me like the plague!

Anyway, I am going to go and cut some Christmas cake now, a very merry Christmas to you all xxx  Star xxx Red heart xxx Star
